Internet newsgroups and bloggers, never afraid to wade against the mainstream, hotly debate the unfolding investigation surrounding John Mark Karr in the 1996 murder of JonBenet Ramsey.
At the Google newsgroup alt.true-crime, posters are skeptical of Karr’s confession.
“During the press conference, I was expecting Jack Ruby to jump out,” wrote one.
“This guy is lying about killing JonBenet,” wrote another. “‘Accidentally’ killed her? Come on … He’s a nut job wanting attention.”
“I don’t have a problem with the arrest (of Karr),” began one post that expressed the group’s general sentiment.
“I’m delighted to have this creep off the street and behind bars where he belongs. But my gut tells me this guy has nothing to do w/JBR other than his sick prurient obsession w/her and the case.”
They also comment on Karr’s odd looks and mannerisms. Guilty or not, many posters find him, as one put it, “an unsavory character.” One poster uncharitably compared the slight, nervous Karr to Ed Grimley, the hyperactive nerd persona of comedian Martin Short.
More cynical bloggers, including the irreverent contributors at , facetiously suggest the arrest is influencing such disparate events as fluctuating oil prices.
“Oil drops below $71 a barrel on JonBenet Ramsey news,” noted a link to a news story on Thursday’s 2 percent drop in crude oil prices.
