Denver’s Moonlight Classic has evolved from a few rebel riders into one of the state’s defining cycling events. This year’s 14th annual lunar pedalfest Saturday night is expected to draw more than 5,000 metro-area cyclists, all gleefully weaving through Denver’s deserted streets on a 15-mile tour of moonlit landmarks. The Kaiser Permanente Moonlight Classic starts at the state Capitol, winds through Cherry Creek and around Washington Park before visiting LoDo on its way back to the Capitol. An 8-mile loop option provides something for the less nocturnal. This year’s race features two starting groups: the “Family Wave” at 10:30 p.m. and the “Gonzo Wave” at 11:30. Preride parties and a postride breakfast add even more revelry to the always festive gathering.
