Investigators today were piecing together the circumstances that led to the drowning of a 22-month-old boy in Elbert County Tuesday night.
The toddler was found unconscious in an inflatable swimming pool in the family’s backyard on Morgan Trail in an unincorporated area of the county near Elizabeth.
Authorities have not released the family’s name.
The child was airlifted to Swedish Hospital in Denver, where he died at 8:26 p.m.
The Elbert County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, joined by the district attorney’s office, the Elbert County coroner and the county social services office.
District Attorney Carol Chambers’ office joined in the investigation as a matter of standard practice involving any suspicious death, said spokeswoman Kathleen Walsh.
She would not elaborate about the case, however.
“This is an ongoing investigation and the district attorney will not discuss any of the details at this time,” Walsh said.
