Commission agenda
A review of Colorado’s financial commitment to the elimination of sport fish as part of the Upper Colorado River Recovery Program for native species will be among the subjects to be discussed Thursday at the meeting of the Colorado Wildlife Commission in Gunnison.
The agenda at the Aspinall-Wilson Center of the Western State College campus will cover modifications to the Walk-In Program, modifications to the landowner preference system and a review of deer management plans in parts of the Gunnison Basin.
Anglers roundtable
Management issues for northeast Colorado will highlight an Anglers Roundtable meeting 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Division of Wildlife education building, 6060 Broadway. The public is invited to discuss matters related to fishing and aquatic habitat in the region.
Wyoming antelope lag
Drought conditions have diminished hunting prospects for antelope in Wyoming, both in numbers and size of horn mass.
Biologists report a reduction in fawn numbers related to lack of moisture. This phenomenon won’t be reflected in the 2006 hunt, but could impact licensing and harvest in subsequent years.
Wildlife area firewood
Trees cut to improve wildlife habitat at Dome Rock State Wildlife Area near Florissant will be available as firewood Sept. 23. A high-clearance 4-wheel-drive is required to access the wood, and saws are required to cut trees into manageable lengths. Access is off Teller County Road 1. For information, 719-227-5200.
Tip nets poacher
A Fremont County resident earned $500 by delivering an anonymous tip that resulted in the arrest of Justin Youngblood, 32, of Pueblo West for shooting an antelope with a rifle during archery season. Youngblood was assessed a $1,770 fine. Citizens who report wildlife crimes are rewarded through the Division of Wildlife Operation Game Thief program, 877-COLO-OGT.
Train your dog
Bird hunting season may be upon us, but it’s never too late to improve the performance of your hunting dog.
C.J. Kausel of Hunt Smart Productions and his German shorthair Cheyenne will be available for two weekend sessions at Gander Mountain stores to get you off on the right foot, er, paw.
Kausel will discuss tactics and equipment for training your dog both in the field and the yard, beginning Sept. 9 at the 9923 Grant Street location. The performance will be repeated Sept. 10 at the 14000 E. Jewell Ave. store. Both will be 11 a.m.-noon.
