Topeka, Kan. – Jordan Brill threw for 309 yards and five touchdowns as Washburn defeated Colorado Mines 41-21 in the nonconference opener for both teams Saturday at Moore Bowl at Yager Field.
Brill, a junior, was 18-of-27, and his five scoring passes tied his career high. Washburn, the defending Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletics Association champion, led early after Brill capped a 69-yard drive with a 12-yard TD pass to Sam Sissom.
Mines scored two touchdowns in the final 35 seconds of the first half. Derek Dykstra scored on a 16-yard pass from Garrett Mehl, and, after Washburn fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Mehl ran into the end zone for 8-yard score as Mines cut their deficit to 24-14.
Mehl led the Orediggers with 29-of-41 passing for 246 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for two touchdowns.
ADAMS STATE 37, DIXIE STATE (UTAH) 7 at Alamosa – Quarterback Clint Buderus, making his first start for the Grizzlies, completed 18-of-33 passes for a game-high 241 yards to give Adams State its first season-opening victory since 1996.
The Grizzlies took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter after Buderus hooked up with sophomore tailback Tyree Walton for a 44-yard touchdown.
A field goal and two more touchdowns – on a 48-yard interception return by Tony Gibalski and Dave Copelan’s 13-yard reception from Buderus – gave Adams State a 24-0 halftime lead.
ANGELO STATE 9, WESTERN STATE 8 at San Angelo, Texas – J.D. Williams’ 54-yard field goal with 7:47 left in the third quarter proved to be the game-winner.
The Mountaineers’ Noah Fouch took a 3-yard pass from Dan Brethauer and Tyrel Davies ran in the conversion for an 8-6 halftime lead. Western had a 180-165 edge in total offense.
CAL POLY 44, FORT LEWIS 0 at San Luis Obispo, Calif. – The Mustangs got two end-around touchdown runs from wide receiver Ernie Cooper and rolled in its season opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Cal Poly was led by running back James Noble’s 127 yards and a touchdown. The Mustangs outgained Fort Lewis (1-1) 436-79 in total offense.
