The University of Colorado at Boulder will hire 25 new professors to improve the student-faculty ratio, chancellor Bud Peterson announced today.

Peterson, giving his first formal address to faculty since he took the job in July, said he has approved funding to hire 10 tenure-track professors, 10 instructors and five new hires to specifically improve diversity or recruit faculty couples to CU.

Peterson said he and provost Phil DiStefano would work with deans to determine which departments would get the new positions.

CU-Boulder has had about 1,000 professors with tenure or on the tenure track for about a decade, despite an increase in 5,000 students during that time.

Professors and administrators have been concerned about the campus’ ratio of 29 students for every tenured or tenure-track professor.
