West Nile in sage grouse
Four greater sage grouse found dead in Moffat County have been confirmed with the West Nile virus. The finding by Division of Wildlife researchers conducting a radio collar study in the area is the only such confirmation since a single sample in 2004.
Researcher Tony Apa noted that this discovery scarcely comes as a surprise, since the virus has been detected in grouse populations in several other Western states.
Colorado’s limited sage grouse season began Saturday. Hunters are advised to take care when cleaning birds and seek protection from mosquitoes that might transmit the disease.
Rocky Ford meeting
Wildlife commissioner Ken Torres will host a discussion of wildlife issues Tuesday at a 6 p.m. open house at Rocky Ford City Hall, 203 Main St.
