The first three open tryouts for the new Colorado 14ers basketball team will be Oct. 13 and 14 at the Pepsi Center and Oct. 15 at the Cheyenne YMCA, the team announced.

The first 40 people to register at each site will be allowed to try out. There will be a morning session and an evening session, each lasting 2 1/2 hours.

Five more tryouts will be announced as dates are finalized. The top five from each tryout will be invited for a final tryout, with two players invited to attend the NBA Development League team’s training camp, which begins Nov. 12. Denver-area athletes honored

Westminster archer Jane Mowbray and judo/wrestler Zachary Maes of Wheat Ridge were named the 2006 Rocky Mountain State Games athletes of the year.

Pioneers select women’s lacrosse coach

Liza Kelly has been named head coach of the women’s lacrosse team at the University of Denver.

Kelly was the coach at Boston University for five years, finishing with a record of 64-33 and appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2005 and 2006.
