San Francisco – Jose Mesa’s durability helped steady the bullpen. His financial flexibility leaves the possibility he could return.
The Rockies are not expected to pick up his $3 million club option, instead exercising a $515,000 escape clause. In most cases, when a team buys out a player, there is no chance of a reunion. Mesa, however, said Tuesday he would consider re-signing with the Rockies when and if his option is declined.
He already has shown a willingness to work within the budget. As part of his contract, he deferred $257,500 of his buyout without interest.
“I had no problem doing that and would consider it again. It’s like having money in the bank,” the 40-year-old Mesa said.
Mesa leads the team with 71 appearances, three shy of his career high, with a 3.38 ERA – 1.04 at Coors Field, 6.14 at visiting parks.
