DES MOINES, Iowa-
Autumn color isn't found only in the Northeast. Here are some recommendations for enjoying fall foliage in the Midwest, from Midwest Living magazine's September/October issue:
–Walk the Superior Hiking Trail atop Mystery Mountain along Minnesota's Lake Superior shore. The trail stretches from Duluth almost to the Canadian border, 275 miles. Boundary Country Trekking coordinates hikes with inns along the trail.
–Canoe Michigan's Heritage Water Trail, a 50-mile waterway along the Nottawa Creek, Portage River, and St. Joseph's River systems. The trail links the small towns of Mendon and Colon and passes through Amish country. You can stay at the Mendon Country Inn and visit the 1887 Langley Covered Bridge on the St. Joseph.
–Bike Missouri's Katy Trail, an 8-foot-wide mostly level path that runs 225 miles west of St. Louis toward Kansas City. You can stay at inns like the Yates House B&B in Rocheport and The Captain Wohlt Inn in Hermann along the way, and stop at evcrything from Hartsburg's annual Punpkinfest to the Adam Puchta Winery.
