Getting your player ready...

Seers have crystal balls. Skiers have the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The center’s annual Avalanche Jam on Friday marks more than a great way to round the turn into ski season. The $35-$40 tickets fuel the CAIC’s brilliant avalanche forecasting machine, a complex and widespread operation that is an essential tool for anyone who travels in Colorado’s snowy backcountry. Colorado has the most schizophrenic snowpack in the country: a fluffy bunny one minute and a deadly tsunami the next. The CAIC’s network of snow scientists – possibly the most talented team of avalanche forecasters on the planet – helps backcountry travelers prepare for the fickle mood swings of Colorado’s steep stashes. Consider the ticket price an investment in your future powder turns, which, of course, are worthy of way more. Live music and beer from New Belgium Brewery will grease the party at downtown Golden’s American Mountaineering Center (710 10th St.). A silent auction offers some of the sweetest snow toys and tools around.

Do it — Get advance tickets at your outdoor retailer or by calling jam sponsor Backcountry Access at 303-417-1345. Click over to http://geosurvey.state.co.us/avalanche/ for more info. Go ahead and slap that site into your favorites menu, while you’re at it. It’s as close to a crystal ball as you can get in Colorado.
