Dry conditions will impact waterfowl hunting for Saturday’s opening of the duck season on part of the Banner Lakes complex near Hudson in Weld County. All ponds on the north side of Colorado 52 are dry, but those on the south side contain water. A reservation system is in place for the state wildlife area, phone 800-846-9453.
U.S. fly-fishing team nets top 10
The U.S. team finished 10th in the World Fly Fishing Championship that concluded last week in Portugal. This marks the third top-10 finish for the Americans in the past four years, this time among 21 nations.
Czechoslovakia won the team title, followed by France, Spain and host Portugal. Pennsylvanian George Daniel paced the team with a fifth-place finish. Most members of the U.S. contingent fished split sessions, a strategy that provided added experience but disqualified them from the individual standings.
Fort Carson derby
Lucky anglers will take home $1,000 in cash and prizes at a Saturday public fishing derby at a reservoir on the base. Orientation begins at 6 a.m. for a contest that runs through 11 a.m. Registration is $20 in advance, $25 at the event. For information, 719-526-5176.
