Missing computers at CU list personal data
Two computers that held students’ names, Social Security numbers and grades are missing from the University of Colorado Leeds School of Business, CU said Friday.
The business school was sending letters to 1,372 students and former students to warn them about identity theft.
CU realized the computers were missing last month while unpacking equipment that was stored in May. No reported cases of fraud or identity theft have resulted from the missing computers, CU said.
University officials said they are unsure whether the computers were stolen or misplaced.
In 2005, CU began eliminating the use of Social Security numbers and other personal information in cases where the information was not necessary.

The passenger was ejected and landed in a tree, 30 feet above the ground, Detective Virginia Quinones said. The driver was trapped in the car.
The victims’ names were withheld pending notification of relatives.

County to investigate handling of Karr case
The Sonoma County sheriff has launched an internal investigation into its handling of the John Mark Karr case.
The focus: a computer bearing pornographic images seized five years ago from the home of the one-time JonBenét Ramsey murder suspect.
The computer was taken from Karr’s home in 2001, when the former substitute teacher was charged with five misdemeanor counts of possessing child pornography.
He fled before his trial, but was arrested again last month in Thailand after suggesting he killed the 6-year-old Colorado beauty queen in 1996. DNA proved he was not involved.
Karr on Thursday rejected a plea deal that would have allowed him to walk out of jail free if he agreed to plead guilty to two of the five charges, serve three years of probation and register as a sex offender. His trial is scheduled for Oct. 2.
