Washington – Jamie Moreno and Christian Gomez both had a goal and two assists Saturday night to help D.C. United secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a 4-3 victory over the New York Red Bulls.
Moreno had not scored since July 29 and had not posted an assist since Aug. 19. Earlier this week, D.C. United’s captain was given a couple days off. He did not start Saturday’s game but entered in the 73rd minute of an emotional evening at RFK Stadium.
Moreno’s goal off a crossing pass from Gomez gave D.C. United a 3-1 lead in the 73rd minute. Ben Olsen also assisted on the play.
Amado Guevara’s goal off an assist by Dema Kovalenko pulled the Red Bulls to 3-2 in the 82nd minute.
CREW 1, DYNAMO 1 at Columbus, Ohio – Jason Garey kept Columbus’ MLS Cup playoff hopes alive with a late goal that gave the Crew a tie with Houston.
Garey’s third goal of the season came in the 80th minute and offset Dwayne De Rosario’s tally 26 minutes earlier.
Crew captain Duncan Oughton sent a looping cross into the Dynamo penalty area, where Garey headed the ball from 9 yards in front of the net, angling it past Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad.
De Rosario’s left-footed strike from 25 yards bounced along the pitch and seemed to go unseen by Crew keeper Bill Gaudette until the ball reached the 6-yard box, giving Gaudette little chance at stopping De Rosario’s 11th goal of the season.
The Crew must win its final three games, two of which are on the road, and hope for losses from Kansas City and New York to have a shot at postseason play. Crew striker Ricardo Virtuoso was shown a yellow card by referee Terry Vaughn for rough play in the 18th minute.
REVOLUTION 1, WIZARDS 1 at Foxborough, Mass. – Clint Dempsey scored for New Eng- land and Scott Sealy answered for Kansas City in a tie that kept both teams on track to make the playoffs.
New England, in third place in the Eastern Conference with 39 points, took the lead in the 17th minute when Dempsey headed a shot inside the top right post.
