Getting your player ready...

“Hey, I’d just like to remind you and the rest of Broncos Nation that Jake Plummer took us to the AFC championship game. Everyone is acting like our season is over and Plummer is the biggest bum in NFL history. Give this guy a break. I’d be shaky, too, if fans were on my tail 24 hours a day. Larry Bird hit slumps; the “Bambino” hit slumps; even John Elway had slumps.”

Nick, Broncos fan since birth (1978)

Kiz: OK. How’s this for a little support? Broncos 13, New England 10. I’m counting on Plummer to beat the mighty Tom Brady. On the road. But if you really see Bird and Babe Ruth when you look at Plummer, I’ll have what you’re drinking.

Plummer’s time is over

“Dead quarterback walking” is a painfully accurate (description). As one who has watched Plummer make some great plays at Arizona State and do some good work as QB for the Broncos, the present-day Jake is through. My hunch is Jake has one more game at New England before Shanny makes the transition to Jay Cutler during the bye week.”

Phil, Wickenburg, Ariz.

Kiz: Cutler is the real deal. He reminds me a little of Troy Aikman, and if Cutler can be half as good as the Cowboys’ Hall of Fame quarterback, he will be far better than Plummer. If Mike Shanahan makes the move to a rookie QB too soon, however, veterans such as Rod Smith (age 36) and John Lynch (34) might also begin to wonder if they are being phased out before Denver’s next trip to the Super Bowl. That being noted, should the Broncos somehow be stuck with a 1-3 record after four games, I would start Cutler on Oct. 15 against the hapless Raiders.

Be more positive toward CU

“I’ve just finished reading your article about Colorado football (and am) wishing you could be more positive about the program. My husband and I have been going to CU games since the early 1950s, and if we have learned anything in our older years, it’s that life is too short not to enjoy whatever the day offers.”

Phyllis, CU Class of 1956

Kiz: You got one thing right. Life is too short. Too short for cheap wine, a lumpy mattress or bad football. But taking the fight to those Dawgs down in Georgia was good stuff. Kudos to the defense. And Bernard Jackson played a heckuva game at QB.

Parting shot

Today’s parting shot, fired by a Patriots fan who apparently took umbrage at the lack of respect shown for New England’s Brady when Kiz wrote: “Mr. Perfect does not scare the Broncos. They own him.”

“Wow, them’s fighting words! You are either a very tough guy for a sportswriter – or a very stupid one. Actually, you sound like either a real Broncos fan or a cub reporter for the Eisenhower Tunnel Times!”

Steve, Portland, Maine
