Washington – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced grants Monday to the Regional Transportation District for rail-transit security and to the Lafayette Fire Department.

RTD will get $1.15 million to boost security for its light-rail system, U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard said. “This funding is crucial to maintain a safe and secure light-rail system,” said Allard, R-Colo.

The award is part of Homeland Security’s national $400 million “infrastructure security” grant program for 2006.

RTD’s light-rail system will expand Nov. 17 with the opening of a new southeast line along Interstate 25. The system received a $600,000 federal security grant last year.

Meanwhile, Lafayette will receive $931,500 in one of 28 grants nationwide under a Homeland Security program to boost local fire and emergency staffing, Allard said.

Lafayette plans to use the money to add three full-time firefighter positions next year to its current full-time force of four.
