CHICAGO-

Eight weeks after having bladder cancer surgery, Cardinal Francis George says he’s feeling much better and isn’t in any pain.

The Roman Catholic archbishop, one of the most prominent U.S. cardinals and the spiritual leader of more than 2.3 million Catholics in the Chicago area, underwent surgery July 27 to have his cancerous bladder removed. Surgeons also removed his prostate, some lymph nodes and a section of his right ureter.

He was released from Loyola University Medical Center on Aug. 15.

George, 69, said Monday that he’s on the mend–and 20 pounds lighter–but not yet fully recovered.

“I’m feeling better. But I still have to walk more to get more strength. The great challenge now is stamina,” he said. “The good news is that I’m not in any pain.”

He said he found the experience of having so many people praying for him “humbling.”

George said if his recovery continues smoothly, he plans a trip to Rome for the Oct. 15 canonization of Blessed Mother Theodore Guerin, founder of Indiana’s Sisters of Providence of St. Mary of the Woods.
