The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has sued a company that manages Colorado Springs’ transit system, claiming minority employees were threatened, insulted and harassed.
According to the suit against Ohio-based Professional Transit Management, mechanic Andy Martinez and others who worked at Springs Transit were subjected to a hostile environment that the company failed to stop.
No one from Professional Transit Management or Springs Transit, now called Mountain Metropolitan Transit, could be reached for comment Wednesday.
Martinez’s co-workers subjected him to statements such as “I would shoot every Mexican coming across the border, women and children included,” according to the suit, filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Denver.
Asian and African-American employees were also targeted with racial slurs and graphic insults, the EEOC said.
The agency is asking for compensatory and punitive damages to be determined at a jury trial.
