Here’s a shout out to Tim Robbins, in town next month to be honored at the Starz Denver Film Festival. The 29th edition of the fest runs Nov. 9-19. Robbins is here Nov. 16 to receive the John Cassavetes Award – presented each year to an “American director/actor for unique vision and maverick sensibility in independent filmmaking.” Past winners include William H. Macy, Kevin Bacon, Philip Baker Hall, Sean Penn and others.
Good company. And he’s the missing link from “Mystic River.”
Robbins is bringing a guest. Let’s hope that if it’s his partner, activist/actress Susan Sarandon, she won’t lecture us on Bush, war and global warming.
Robbins has a role in the flick “Tenacious D in ‘The Pick of Destiny,”‘ which opens Nov. 17 – so maybe that’ll get in the fest. And that would be interesting.
Here’s some scoop: Big movies coming to the fest include “Volver” with Penelope Cruz and “Breaking and Entering,” starring Jude Law, Juliette Binoche, Robin Wright Penn and Martin Freeman – from “English Patient” director Anthony Minghella.
The fest will close again with a silent movie – King Vidor’s 1925 classic “The Big Parade” with Hank Troy hitting the 88s. Character actor Scott Wilson (he’s been in everything) will be honored. Mayor Hick is helping lock down the recipient of the Mayor’s Award. More names and deets as we get them.
Yea! Fray!
Denver band The Fray was skedded to play Red Rocks Saturday night – and they brought a gift with them.
The boys – Isaac Slade, Joe King, Ben Wysocki and Dave Welsh – handed over $35,000 to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. The donation, combined with some big corporate bucks, brings the total to $500,000 to reinstate 20 musical education programs in Denver Public Schools.
The guys all went to Denver public schools, so this is a way of doing the cornball thing you always hear about: Giving back.
Are you ready for some?
While some women find it sexist, the Broncos again offers the organization’s NFL 101 Workshop Oct. 13 at Invesco.
It runs 4:30-9:30 p.m. – geared for women with presentations from players and coaches on football terms and strategies, a stadium tour, equipment demonstration (always a favorite), hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and a raffle. Players this year include Keith Burns, Patrick Chukwurah, Curome Cox, Louis Green, Kyle Johnson and D.J. Williams. Check it out at denverbroncos.com/nfl101.
City spirit
Nov. 13’s AMC Cancer’s Annual Men’s Event at the Palm costs you $750, but you get steak, martinis and valet parking. No smoking this year, which is probably better at a cancer benefit. Co-chairs are Paul Bunn, Bob Kaufman, Dick Robinson, Michael Thiret, Pete Coors, Bob Malone, Mark Schwartz and Steve “Toltzy” Toltz … Jim Brickman gets you into the holiday spirit early at a concert Nov. 25 at the Buell … Kitty Dukakis with the Denver Forum at the Oxford Hotel Oct. 19 … At Thursday night’s opening of the Great American Beer Fest at the Colorado Convention Center, Ann Arbor brewer Stacy Ross was set to marry Tom Block. It’s not center court at a Nuggets game, but it still gets you right here … Sez who: “The only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well.” Joe Ancis
