MIAMI-
The Canadian Meteorological Service upgraded a tropical storm watch for a portion of southeastern Newfoundland, Canada, to a tropical storm warning early Monday as Hurricane Isaac sped over the north Atlantic.
The warning was issued for the Avalon Peninsula, including the cities of Cape Race and St. Johns.
A tropical storm watch was also issued for the Burin Peninsula and Bonavista Peninsula in southeastern Newfoundland.
At 5 a.m. EDT, Isaac maintained hurricane strength with top sustained winds near 75 mph. It was centered about 500 miles south-southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and moving north-northeast near 30 mph.
