KEY WEST, Fla.-

Key West is hosting its annual Halloween extravaganza, known as Fantasy Fest, from Oct. 20-29.

The 10-day event includes a masquerade competition for pets and their owners, a headdress ball and the Pretenders in Paradise costume competition.

The Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade is one of the highlights, featuring floats, costumed marching groups and island-style bands in a procession along Duval Street. It’s scheduled for 7 p.m., Oct. 28. Grand marshal will be Matt Strahan, chief meteorologist of the National Weather Service Key West office, and his forecasting team. Festival officials chose the weather wizards to honor their forecasting work in 2005, when Hurricane Wilma threatened South Florida a few days before the Fantasy Fest start date and forced a six-week postponement of festival events.

This year’s events kick of with a Royal Coronation Ball to crown a king and queen Oct. 20.
