GADGET|It’s the time of year to check out fall colors, and a dashboard-mounted GPS device might be just the accessory for the season. One resource for places to tour is at the U.S. Forest Service’s fall foliage website at fs.fed .us/news/fallcolors. Choose three or four destinations that meander through the region of fall foliage you’ve chosen, and the unit will figure out where in the world it is by connecting to three of the 27 GPS satellites orbiting Earth. At $299, the Garmin StreetPilot i3 (garmin.com) is a great unit. It’s small and has a suction-cup base so you can easily move it from one car to another, and it has a 128-megabyte memory card for storing maps.|Chicago Tribune

DON’T-MISS TV|Time for the small-town Texas high school football season opener. NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” gets its premiere (7 tonight on Channel 9), an hour about much more than touchdowns. While it may be fun to follow the fox trotters on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars,” the satisfaction of catching one of the year’s best, most soulful drama pilots is greater.|Joanne Ostrow
