The judge in the case of Brian Allen Washington, charged with shooting and killing an Aurora police detective, ordered the arrest-warrant and search-warrant affidavits unsealed Monday, over the objections of Washington’s attorney.
In a brief hearing, District Court Judge C. Vincent Phelps said it is no longer necessary for those records to remain sealed because the investigation into the case is largely complete.
The documents likely detail authorities’ account of what happened the day Aurora detective Mike Thomas was killed and may include witness statements. The warrants will be available today. Melissa Garscin, Washington’s attorney, objected to the unsealing.
Thomas was shot and killed Sept. 20, while he sat in plain clothes in his personal car at an intersection.
