You make me feel like dancing. I’ll be singing that Saturday night at the Dancing for the Cure Gala at the Seawell Ballroom.
Following the phenomenal success of “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC, the Colorado Neurological Institute came up with its own program – with Denver bold names stepping up as the stars.
On the floor Saturday will be Jamie Angelich, Janet Elway, Troy Guard, Gail Johnson, Douglas Kerbs, Sharon Magness Blake, Joyce Moses, Les Shapiro and Judi Wolf.
The gang has been practicing for weeks at Dancesport in Littleton. They will dance with their partners for less than two minutes – each in an elaborate costume.
Says Wolf: “Don’t blink. It has been joyful, painful, exhilarating, intimidating and uplifting. It really is about blood, sweat and tears.”
Angelich may have shed a few – she has a torn hamstring which she’s treating daily with wraps and heat so she can get out there and dance the dance.
The judges are Terry Vitale, Cleo Parker Robinson and Kent Thompson. Feet, don’t fail me now.
Winos
Here’s a job. 5280 magazine has started a new feature called “Pairings.” Each issue, former pro cyclist and “wine junkie” Jonathan Vaughters takes a local bold name out to a local bar/restaurant and drinks wine with her/him. All on the company dime.
Out of the gate, Vaughters takes socialite Holly Kylberg to Sketch Food & Wine.
They start with a bottle of 2004 A to Z rose at $40. Holly gives it an A-plus.
They move on to a 1999 Roger Lassarat “La Rotie” St. Veran at $70 – a white Burgundy. After that bottle Kylberg opens up (who wouldn’t?) as Vaughters presses her for an opinion.
“I had a fairly difficult childhood,” says Kylberg. “I felt like an ugly duckling for a long time. I never fit in to any school cliques. I still think of myself as an ugly duckling, and I tend to keep my more controversial opinions to myself.”
OK. So what did she think of the wine?
“It’s great, just maybe not my thing.”
Out come the steaks with the third bottle of wine, a rare California 2004 Sea Smoke Pinot Noir at $104. Holly’s eyes light up as she says, “I like it. It tastes good.”
Not a bad night’s work: $214 of wine, then add dinner and tip. The payoff? Some scoop from Kylberg.
Primed for action
Prime 121 is set to open with a VIP party Oct. 20 – and owner/op Scott Fickling is so sure of the date he’s having the invitations printed.
I’ve been through the joint – and the bar will swing, intimate with six-person booths against the opposite wall that’ll be the hottest seats in The Creek.
City spirit
Rioja’s Jennifer Jasinski won Sunday’s Steel Chef cookoff at the Denver Food & Wine Classic with the help of former Nugget Mark Randall. In the final round, they faced Mizuna’s Frank Bonanno and his sous chef, Altitude TV’s Julie Browman … Sez who: “I think; therefore, I’m single.” Lizz Winstead
