Rain was expected along the East Coast on Sunday, while thunderstorms were forecast for the Southwest.
A low-pressure system was to bring below-normal temperatures and scattered areas of heavy rain to the Southeast. It also was likely to cause minor coastal flooding from Florida to Long Island, New York.
Clear skies and cool high pressure building in New England were expected to allow temperatures to dip below freezing. The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for parts of Massachusetts and frost advisories for Albany, N.Y., and for eastern Massachusetts into New Hampshire and Maine.
Thunderstorms in the Southwest were expected to spread throughout the Four Corners and into the Southern Plains. Severe weather was possible throughout the region.
Clouds were developing over the Rockies and western Plains, suppressing a recent heat wave. Temperatures were expected to rise in the West. Highs in California’s Central Valley could reach into the lower 90s.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Saturday ranged from a low of 21 degrees at Whitefield, N.H., to a high of 96 degrees at Wink, Texas.
