Director/screenwriter Anthony Minghella is slated to come to Denver Nov. 9 with his movie “Breaking and Entering” to open the Starz Denver Film Festival. He will also receive the Mayor’s Career Achievement Award – for his work on “Cold Mountain,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “The English Patient” and other fine flicks.
This announcement comes just one day after Mayor John Hickenlooper announced that “The Milagro Beanfield War” is the 2006 selection for One Book, One Denver. The buzz is that Hick was trying to make a package of “Beanfield” – with the town reading the book and the film’s director, Robert Redford, coming to the fest for the mayor’s award along with a screening of the 1988 movie. And the author, John Nichols, is set to be at the Tattered Cover Nov. 14, smack in the middle of the film fest. It could have been a beanfield film fiesta.
The movie will be screened free on Nov. 19. But, alas, it didn’t work out with Redford’s schedule. He is in town this week, however, for the Urban Land Institute Fall Conference.
Hey, he’s a busy guy.
The closing film will be Werner Herzog’s “Rescue Dawn,” where I’m told we can expect some wattage.
Aloha, Big Head
Big Head Todd and the Monsters are headed to Hawaii.
This May 20-26, the band plans to take over much of the five-star Prince Hapuna Beach Resort on the big island of Hawaii. Local rocker Hazel Miller is down to perform also.
But the resort’s website said Wednesday in the wake of the earthquakes in the area that it is taking care of guests only who already are there. “Over the next 24 hours we will be assessing the situation and will determine the status of future reservations.” Trip organizer Kevin Clark at Local Knowledge Travel (303-697-0399) says no sweat – the lodge is fine, and the trip is on. And, he adds, he plans to take the band on a cruise through the Mediterranean in 2008! Big Head, France, Italy and Greece!

Somethin’ else
Two veteran Denver restaurant guys, chef Alex Seidel and front-of-the-house-man Paul Attardi, most recently at Mizuna, are set to take over Sean Kelly’s Somethin’ Else at East Sixth Avenue and Marion Street. Somethin’ Else remains open until the deal is done.
They’ll call it Fruition, because it’s the fruition of their dream, and it’ll serve top-grade comfort food. They hope to open mid-December, serving dinner Tuesday-Sunday.
Seidel is also an expectant daddy – baby due early December. He’s got a full plate.
