Taylor Schriner, a senior at Legacy High School in Broomfield, might not have bagged Colorado’s biggest moose during the recently concluded season. But at age 17, he might be the youngest to bag a bull.

The lucky moment came just 20 minutes after sunrise on opening day, after a three-quarter-mile stalk to within 100 yards. Then the work began, nearly eight hours of cutting and carrying.

“I couldn’t believe how big it was and how long it would take to get it cleaned out and cut up,” he said.

Schriner’s elation at least partly faded late last week when the animal tested positive for chronic wasting disease, making all that meat unusable.

The Division of Wildlife refunded the cost of the license.
