The Colorado High School Activities Association today will confirm five sets of football playoff pairings as well as regional volleyball matchups for next weekend.
In football, Classes 5A, 2A, 1A, 8-man and 6-man are set for elimination-round preliminaries.
There’s a switch to a 32-team bracket for 5A (2A, 1A and 8-man have 16; 6-man has eight), but was drawn from a field of 32 schools. There are still next weekend’s lineups for 4A and 3A, which will complete a 10th week of regular-season games Friday and Saturday before being pared to 16-team fields. The 4A bracket will be drawn from a state-high field of 55 schools.
New class and league designations won’t stop five defending champions from seeing their names in today’s brackets – Douglas County (5A), Holy Family (2A), Limon (1A), Merino (8-man) and Idalia (6-man.).
As for volleyball, last week’s district rounds in five classes were whittled to 16-team regional groups. By next weekend, the groups will be cut in half to the final eight.
Baseball
The Colorado baseball and high school coaches associations will host a baseball clinic Dec. 8-9 at the Sheraton Four Points Hotel, at Interstate 25 and Hampden Avenue.
The fee ranges from $50-$75. For information, contact Bill Percy, clinic director, 719-593-0878 or bpercy@smhscs.org, or Shawn Wyss, association president, 303-933-3793.
Commitments
With preseason practice for winter sports set to begin in less than two weeks, in-state girls basketball players are making their college choices known for the early signing period.
Included are Kelly Hartig, a 6-foot-3 forward from ThunderRidge who will sign with Virginia. Hartig will join her sister, Jayna, with the Cavaliers. ThunderRidge advanced to the Class 5A state semifinals in 2005-06.
Horizon’s Hannah Tuomi, The Denver Post Ms. Colorado Basketball last season, will sign with Vanderbilt. Tuomi led the Hawks to a state runner-up finish last season.
