Message: The television commercial says Republican Rick O’Donnell has distorted 7th Congressional District candidate Ed Perlmutter’s record on crime issues.
Fact: While O’Donnell has questioned Perlmutter’s record on other crime issues when Perlmutter was a state senator, the television commercial that Perlmutter criticizes actually was sponsored by the National Republican Congressional Committee, not O’Donnell. That NRCC commercial criticized Perlmutter for “killing” House Bill 97-1257, which would have bolstered sex-offender-notification laws. But the NRCC commercial does not mention that the Republican sponsor of the legislation wanted the bill tabled because local law enforcement agencies had concerns about local control issues. In 1998 Perlmutter worked with Republican legislator Dottie Wham of Denver to pass more comprehensive sex-offender-notification laws.
