Durango – The defending national champion Fort Lewis men’s soccer team kept alive its hopes for another title after escaping with a 2-1 shootout victory over visiting Midwestern State in an NCAA Division II second-round game at Dirks Field on Sunday.

David Barden’s header for a goal, on an assist by John Cunliffe, tied the game 1-1 in the 87th minute. Then, during a shootout, Skyhawks goalie Tom Donley made two saves and forced a shot off the post to give Fort Lewis a 3-1 advantage and the victory.

No. 2 Fort Lewis (19-1-1) advances to face Seattle University (12-7-1) in the D-II quarterfinals Saturday.

WOMEN

METRO STATE 2, ST. EDWARD’S 0

The Roadrunners got two first-half goals from Kylee Hanavan to eliminate visiting St. Edward’s in the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament at Auraria Field.

Metro State (21-2-0), ranked No. 7 nationally, had a 17-2 shot advantage over the Hilltoppers (17-3-2). Metro State will host Cal-San Diego on Saturday at noon in the quarterfinals.

TEXAS 2, COLORADO 1, SO

San Antonio – No. 9 Texas edged No. 23 Colorado 5-4 through six rounds of a shootout to win the Big 12 Championship at Blossom Soccer Stadium.

It was the third straight double-overtime game for Colorado (12-5-4). The Buffs will find out today if they earned a fourth consecutive at-large bid into the NCAA Division I tournament. Texas (17-3-2) earned its first Big 12 title.

Colorado’s Alex Cousins headed in a goal in the 79th minute from a free-kick assist by Katie Griffin, that tied the game at 1-1.

UAB 3, COLORADO COLLEGE 2

Dallas – Alabama-Birmingham got a goal from Jill Porto in the 83rd minute and held off a late Colorado College rally to win the Conference USA soccer championship at Westcott Field on the campus of Southern Methodist University.

Colorado College (15-5-1) brought the score to 3-2 in the 87th minute from a goal by Jamie Maltman, but couldn’t make up the difference.

At-large bids will be determined today when the NCAA announces the tournament bracket at 1 p.m. on ESPNews.
