Two women were killed and a child was injured when two sport utility vehicles collided head-on Monday night, shutting down a major road into Roxborough Park in northwest Douglas County, authorities said.

The crash occurred at 6:07 p.m., when a northbound Land Rover Discovery crossed the grassy median on North Rampart Range Road and collided with a southbound Jeep, sheriff’s Lt. Kim Castellano said.

Both drivers, unidentified women, died at the scene.

A girl – believed to be about 3 years old – was strapped into a child seat in the Land Rover and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where her condition was stable, Castellano said.

“It appears that car seat, I would say, absolutely saved that child’s life,” Castellano said.

The crash closed a section of North Rampart Range Road from Village Circle East to Waterton Road for several hours while traffic was diverted to Roxborough Road. Investigators were trying to determine why the driver of the Land Rover crossed the median.
