Another bridge in Huntington is turning pink and that has some residents seeing red. Patricia Proctor, who lives near the 8th Street bridge, said she doesn’t agree with Mayor David Felinton’s decision to allow Jason Sansom to paint the bridge pink.
Last month, Sansom got into a little hot water with the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District after he took it upon himself to paint the 12th Street bridge in Ritter Park pink in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Sansom had to repaint the park bridge white, but because the 8th Street bridge is owned by the city, he needed only the mayor’s blessing to paint it pink.
“Anyone who is not in favor of having this done, they’re automatically accused of not supporting breast cancer, and that’s completely the wrong impression,” Proctor said. “It’s about property. The bridge is historic and did not require any maintenance, and I think it was inappropriate for the mayor to make a decision without asking the public.”
Apparently, a man who drove by while Sansom was painting the 8th Street bridge pink doesn’t agree with mayor’s decision, either.
Sansom said the man got out of his car and threatened to beat him up. On a second drive-by, Sansom said the man threw a bucket of pink paint into Fourpole Creek underneath the bridge.
The mayor said Sansom was “doing a good thing for a good cause.”
“Despite some people who view the pink bridge as being negative, I see it as positive,” Felinton said.
