When Curious Theatre Company came up with the idea of Denver Stories, artistic director Chip Walton wanted impresario Bob Garner to be involved. Garner balked.

Each year, the heralded acting company salutes Denver denizens with 20-minute original plays. Last year it was a gasser with plays about restaurateurs Mel and Janie Master, runner/former first lady Ellen Hart, socialite Holly Kylberg and developer Mickey Zeppelin with artist Susan Kirk.

This year they’ve lassoed Westword’s Patty Calhoun, Frontier’s Andrew Hudson and fire-head socialite Judi Wolf for the next outing (skedded for May 9). They kept asking Garner, and he kept saying no, not me, not really. But he finally gave in last week.

“What can I say,” Garner sighs. “Persistence pays off. I just didn’t want to make a fool of myself.”

No chance of that.

Garner brought B’way plays to Denver for decades – and he has always been a generous supporter of Curious. It’s a perfect fit.

Bubbles

The annual Champagne Cascade came down Sunday at the Brown Palace without incident. Bernard Ganter from Moet slashed the tops off bottles with a saber, then filled up the top layers of the tower of 6403 glasses. To fill them all up would take 1005 cases, an unfathomable waste. I mean, think of all the sober people in China.

The cascade celebration will turn 20 next year, so expect something spectacular.

The Dems are coming?

Next year’s National Democratic Convention will be in NYC or Denver. NY Post columnist Cindy Adams thinks she has the scoop. On Tuesday, she wrote: “And per my D.C. eavesdroppers, New York has the lock on August ’08’s Dem convention. The Bushies, with their unerring feel for the pulse of the people, already picked whiz-bang Minneapolis for their rah-rah. The Democrats are teeter-tottering between us and Denver. And which would you pick?”

Can’t get enough of them Broncos? This is your week.

NFL Films is out with a new two-disc DVD. “Broncos – The Complete History” covers the entire life of the franchise, almost 50 years. And watching the 6-hour doc feels like it.

We have interviews with John Elway, Lyle Alzado, Haven Moses, Tom Jackson, John Lynch, Jake Plummer, Floyd Little, Rich “Tombstone” Jackson and Mike Shanahan. What, no Barrel Man?

Not to be left behind, the Broncos biggest mouth, CBS trash-talker Shannon Sharpe, was in Denver Thursday to sign the sets at Best Buy.

Stories

Immaculee Ilibagiza has a story to tell – of hiding in a bathroom for 91 days in Rwanda as her family and friends were all slaughtered. Sounds like a horror movie – but too real.

She’s on “60 Minutes” this month with her book “Left to Tell,” and she’s at the Newman Center in Denver 7:30 p.m. Monday. Tix at 303-357-ARTS.
