Q&A
Les Carruthers, 55, recently was named the
postmaster for the city of Aurora. He will be the senior postal manager for the third-largest post office in the Colorado/Wyoming Postal Service District.
1. How did you get started in the postal service industry?
“I was a letter carrier for the city of Denver at Montclair Station. I carried for 14 years, then a supervisor encouraged me to get into management.”
2. What is the U.S. Postal Service doing to keep up with other types of communication, such as e-mail?
“Automation. We have automated postal centers that are open 24 hours a day in most of the big offices. You can go in anytime with your debit card and do whatever you need to do.”
3. Do you have a favorite stamp?
“As cliche as it sounds, I like the flag stamp.”
4. Why do dogs bark at postal carriers?
“It’s because we are infringing on their property and they are acting as a protector.
5. What is the biggest issue facing the U.S. Postal Service?
“To remain competitive with everyone, and service is key. We need to provide service so we are in business for years to come. And if you provide excellent service, the customers will continue to keep coming back.”
