Colorado Open Lands has named Phil James of Fort Collins as its 2006 recipient of the George E. Cranmer Award for his work in conservation affairs. More recently a member of the Colorado Wildlife Commission, James has been active in environmental protection in his native Nebraska as well as his adopted state. With two other landowners, he donated a 4,000-acre conservation easement adjacent to the Phantom Canyon reserve north of Fort Collins. The presentation will be made at a 5:30 p.m. Nov. 27 awards reception at the Colorado History Museum. Tickets cost $100. For information, 303-988-2373.

Poacher information sought

The Division of Wildlife is seeking information about the shooting of a 6-point bull elk left intact near Peewink Mountain Road west of Boulder. Persons with knowledge of the event may call Operation Game Thief, 1-877-265-6648.

Big business in outdoor activity

A study announced recently by the Outdoor Industry Association proclaims active outdoor recreation contributes $730 billion annually to the U.S. economy, supporting 6.5 million jobs. These activities also generate $88 billion in federal and state tax revenue and represent 8 percent of all consumer spending. The study, performed by Southwick Associates, represents fishing, hunting, camping, bicycling, paddling, hiking, snow sports and wildlife viewing.

No winter drilling

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will recommend the Bureau of Land Management reject requests for natural gas drilling during the winter in the Pinedale area. Bernie Holz, an area supervisor, cited “abysmal” shrub production as the reason the department opposes subjecting the region’s deer and antelope to additional stress.
