Hibernation Ale, $8.99 a six-pack
It’s as much a Colorado holiday tradition as turkey and mistletoe.
Great Divide Brewing in Denver just released the 11th season of Hibernation Ale, a full-bodied “strong ale.” It’s an arrival I look forward to.
Made with five kinds of malts, it’s brewed in the summer so it can age for three months. At 8.1 percent alcohol (by volume), it’s one of the bigger seasonals on local shelves.
Hibernation, which won a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 1997 and a silver in 2003, is ripe with malt and hops but smooth drinking despite its high levels of alcohol.
It’s expected to be available through mid-December.
