Students at Adams City High School were evacuated briefly this morning when several students complained of something in the air that was irritating their throats.
A Commerce City police officer responded and felt the same irritation, then ordered the school evacuated.
Firefighters brought in monitoring equipment but were not able to identify the substance. It was in the hallways of the southwest corner of the school, at the opposite end of the school from the science labs.
“It was not anything developed by the science labs,” said police spokesman Sgt. Joe Sandoval. “It was like a pepper spray except it didn’t affect your eyes like a true pepper spray.”
Fire officials were not able to identify the substance. After fanning out the hallways, the school’s 1,500 students returned to classes shortly before lunchtime.
Nobody was injured, Sandoval said.
