When five disabled American veterans began searching for deer Nov. 4 on the Lowery ranch north of Rifle, it was anything but an ordinary hunt.
Inspired by a traveling display of the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Wall, Jerald “Butch” Lowery, himself a veteran, decided to stage something special for those who liked to hunt. When Lowery died in August, members of his family – including a stepson who took leave from the U.S. Navy to help – elected to carry on.
They fashioned a handicapped-accessible bunkhouse, cooked meals and, with a local Boy Scout troop, built a special blind. A National Wild Turkey Foundation Chapter provided food and guides.
When the hunt was done, all five vets had bagged a deer.
