Spokane, Wash. – Henry Dugat scored 29 points as Baylor beat Colorado State 87-82 in double overtime Tuesday in the opening game of the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Spokane Arena.

Two free throws by Tim Bush with 41 seconds left provided the winning points for Baylor (2-0).

Jason Smith scored 25 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds for Colorado State (1-1).

“It was unbelievably disheartening,” Rams coach Dale Layer said. He added: “We’ve been working with Jason on some things the last two or three weeks. He really came through tonight. He did so many things attacking the rim that he had not been consistently doing.

“He grew up in a lot of ways.”

In the second overtime, Dugat’s basket with three minutes left lifted Baylor to a 79-78 lead. After a Colorado State turnover, Aaron Bruce’s runner made it 81-78 Baylor with 2:27 left. Smith’s layup cut Baylor’s lead to 81-80.

Stuart Creason’s short jumper gave the Rams an 82-81 lead with 59 seconds left. Bush was fouled and made both free throws to lift Baylor to an 83-82 lead with 41 seconds left. Colorado State turned the ball over and was forced to foul with 16 seconds remaining.

Duget made two free throws with 16 seconds left for an 85-82 lead. Cory Lewis’ 3-point shot fell short for Colorado State.

In the first overtime, Dugat’s runner with 45 seconds left gave Baylor a 75-73 lead. But Smith’s layup with 18 seconds left tied the score. Curtis Jerrells missed an open 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game into a second overtime.

Near the end of regulation time, free throws by Tim Denson and Smith built a 66-61 CSU lead. Dugat’s 3-pointer with 1:52 left and his short jumper with 45 seconds left tied the score at 66-66. Both teams missed shots as regulation ended.

Baylor went on an early 14-1 run to take a 23-7 lead in the first half, and led 29-28 at halftime.

“I think we were a little shell shocked early,” Smith said. “We didn’t know if we could play with a Big 12 team.”

Baylor will play the winner of the Rice-Gonzaga game. The Rams will face the loser.
