Police captured a suspected car thief at gunpoint next to the emergency room entrance of Children’s Hospital early this morning.

The suspect stole a car early this morning in Jefferson County, triggering the car’s OnStar emergency/theft warning system.

Police spotted the car near 23rd Avenue and Ogden Street around 6:15 a.m. today. As the suspect jumped from the car and ran, a news helicopter hovered above and guided police.

The suspect threw off a tan jacket, which police later recovered and found two knives in a pocket.

Breathless officers on foot were soon joined by patrol cars, which eventually cornered the man near Children’s Hospital. As he ran toward the emergency room entrance, several officers drew their weapons and stopped him before he could enter the hospital.

The man has not been identified by police, who took him to the city jail. No one was injured.
