Aurora – The latest class of the Colorado High School Activities Association Hall of Fame, the 18th in the history of the organization, may be one of is best.
The class will be inducted during the annual banquet Jan. 24, at the Radisson Hotel Denver Southeast (Interstate 225 and Parker).
The group includes a major-league baseball player and a CHSAA commissioner.
Rich “Goose” Gossage, Wasson, won six letters in baseball and basketball before embarking on a 22-year career for six major-league teams. His 310 saves rank eighth all time.
Carol Callan is the assistant executive director for women’s programs for USA Basketball. Among her accomplishments are serving as athletic director at Fairview and coaching girls basketball (1978-85), winning a state championship in 1985.
Cody Dusenberry-Kerekes, Smoky Hill, won 12 letters in softball, basketball and lacrosse, all after losing her hearing to a childhood illness. Dusenberry has taught and coached at the Colorado School for the Deaf & Blind.
Richard “Dick” Evans, Wray, is a longtime coach in baseball, basketball, football and track.
Mike Jackson, Aurora Central, competed in soccer and track, but was best known for his basketball abilities. He starred at Wyoming before a knee injury ended his chance at a pro career.
Bob Ottewill spent 30 years with CHSAA, 10 as commissioner, and easily was the organization’s most-recognized face.
Dick Yates, South/John F. Kennedy, had tenure that spanned more than 50 years. The face of Denver Prep league athletics for decades, his teams in baseball, basketball and football won 22 league titles and six state championships.
He still dabbles in coaching at Kent Denver, where he helps his son, Scott, in football.
