The Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League got five points from Riley Nelson to defeat the visiting Rocky Mountain Rage 6-0 on Saturday at the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.

Nelson scored two goals and added three assists and Eagles goaltender Marco Emond stopped all 30 shots he faced. Colorado (9-2-0) also added its league-leading ninth short-handed goal of the season and killed 11 Rocky Mountain (3-6-2) power plays to remain atop the Northwest Division.

Adams State women runners win NCAA title

The Adams State women’s cross country team placed three runners in the top 20 and edged Western State to win its fourth consecutive NCAA Division II national championship at the Escambia County Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Fla.

It was Adams State’s 12th overall championship. Western State’s Esther Komen captured the individual title by running the 6-kilometer race in 20 minutes, 9.4 seconds. Western State’s Agnes Kroneraff finished fifth in 20:29.8 and Adams State’s Brittany Somers was eighth in 20:35.4.

Abilene Christian shocked Adams State in winning the Division II men’s national title, its first cross country championship. Adams State had been ranked No. 1 throughout the season, but Abilene Christian’s Nicodemus Naimadu ran the 8K race in 29:17.5 to win his third individual title.

Western State’s Kim Hogarth finished fifth in 29:32.2. Derek Yorek was Adam State’s top placer in seventh after finishing in 29:37.5. The Grizzlies earned their third straight runner-up finish after winning the title in 2003.
