Limon’s victory streak is over at 50.
In the upset of the 2006 playoffs, the Lyons Lions went into Limon’s Lloyd Gaskill Field and shocked the Badgers 21-16 on Saturday afternoon in the Class 1A semifinals.
Three-time defending state champion Limon ended its season 11-1. The Badgers eliminated the Lions (11-1) a year ago in the semifinals and it was Limon’s first loss since losing to Lyons in the 2002 state preliminaries.
Eric Kelly made two huge plays for Lyons in the fourth quarter with a sack of Limon quarterback Travis Sandersfeld and a 21-yard touchdown reception. Kelly also had a fumble recovery.
Limon’s seniors ended with a 50-1 career record. The longest current winning streak in Colorado belongs to 6-man Idalia, which has won its past 23 games.
Lyons will meet Akron in next weekend’s championship game after the Rams pasted host Burlington 40-21 as six players scored touchdowns.
The Rams (12-0), who will host the title game for the second consecutive season, led 20-7 at halftime, then won going away with fourth-quarter touchdowns by Logan Davisson and Trent Campbell.
Burlington, which ended 10-2, was led by senior linebacker-running back Brian Hendricks, who ran 17 times for 150 yards.
Class 3A
In the quarterfinals, Alamosa got four touchdown passes by Clay Garcia in a 34-26 victory at Rifle.
The Mean Moose improved to 12-0. Rifle ended 8-4.
Garcia threw two scoring passes each to Dustin Bolt and Sonny Yohn.
Garcia added an insurance touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Thompson ran for three touchdowns for the Bears.
The Mean Moose will have a rematch from the regular season in the semfinals against Florence, which downed visiting Palisade 21-18.
Bryce Buderus scored two touchdowns for Florence, including a 2-yarder in the fourth quarter for the winning points. Buderus also threw for a touchdown, 31 yards to Adam Nish, to open the game’s scoring.
Florence is 10-2. Palisade finished 8-4.
Elsewhere, Pueblo County joined Alamosa and Florence as South Metro teams in the semifinals with a 41-7 rout of visiting Steamboat Springs.
Pueblo County (10-2) rolled to a 27-0 halftime lead and had little trouble.
Myles Martinez rushed for two touchdowns for the Hornets and had 124 yards on 10 attempts. Teammate Zach Martinez iced it with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Steamboat Springs ended 10-2. The Hornets next get undefeated Summit (12-0), which drubbed Englewood 17-0.
The Tigers’ Ryan Eberhart caught two touchdown passes from Talon Roggasch, 16 and 28 yards.
Englewood finished 9-3.
Class A 8-man
It will be Granada at Stratton next weekend for the championship.
Granada earned a 35-20 road victory in the semifinals and Stratton rolled visiting Nucla 38-22.
Tyndan Marquez threw four touchdown passes for Granada (12-0) and Todd May threw for four for Stratton (11-1).
