Nominations are being accepted for The Denver Post Gold Helmet Award, which is celebrating its 56th year.
The deadline is Dec. 5.
Since 1951, when Bill Faddis of Regis received the first award, The Post annually has honored the top combination of football player, scholar and citizen in schoolboy football in Colorado.
Last year’s winner was Tim McGraw of Douglas County, now a lineman at the University of Northern Colorado.
To be considered for the award, nominees must be seniors and have a 3.5 grade-point average or better with a strong academic base and be involved in activities outside of school.
They must be named to The Denver Post’s all-state first team. Because The Post will not announce all-state teams until later in December, anyone nominating a player may call Neil H. Devlin at The Post’s sports department (303-954-1714) to see if that player is being considered for all-state honors.
The Post will announce the winner in the annual fall all-state section and he will receive his trophy during halftime of the Broncos-San Francisco 49ers game on Dec. 31.
Nominees must be submitted by athletic directors or coaches only and sent to Neil H. Devlin, high school sports editor, The Denver Post, 101 W. Colfax, Denver 80202, or fax, 303-866-9004.
