Getting your player ready...

As children, many of us had visions of careers adults would consider “unrealistic.”

I recall the nurse-teacher-firefighter-Air Force captain game I used to play in anticipation of my future. This amalgamation of the jobs held by adults I admired – my mother, grandmother, teacher and uncle – soon gave way to dreams of my own.

In youth, we often know exactly what we want from life and the strategy to make that knowledge reality. By the time of high school graduation, however; many are so lost and confused that choosing a college major is more of a quandary than a confirmation of aspirations.

Many stray from original goals and dreams during the years between playing “house” and actually purchasing a home because we get so caught up in “making a living,” that often we forget to create a life.

So how do we return to the purity and zeal of our youthful aspirations?

First, take time to remember. What is it that you wanted out of life? Is that still a goal you’d like to achieve? If not, what would you want to accomplish during your lifetime?

Next, make changes to reach your goal. Do you need to add or remove people or things from your life in order to live more fully and achieve your dreams? Perhaps carving out more time for your dreams and doing less for others is necessary. Maybe taking a class or a knowledge-gathering junket is in order. Find out the steps to make your dream reality.

Finally, take action. A dream without action is only a wish. Do what it takes to make your wishes come true.
