The man elected to be the new treasurer in
Arapahoe County has been told his home will be auctioned in January
because he missed too many mortgage payments.
Doug Milliken contributed $12,050, including $10,000 in May, to
his successful campaign for treasurer before getting final notice
that his home in Centennial would be sold off.
His house was scheduled to be auctioned Jan. 3, the day before
Milliken is to be sworn in as treasurer, the Rocky Mountain News
reported in Wednesday editions.
Milliken, current treasurer for Centennial, said he didn t have
problems making payments on his home when he made the campaign
contributions.
The foreclosure process began Nov. 6, the day before the
election.
Milliken said he was four months behind on payments at one point
but that it has been taken care of by his mortgage insurance.
But an attorney for Irwin Mortgage Corp., which holds Milliken s
mortgage, said the foreclosure was moving forward and that the
insurance did not clear up overdue payments.
The foreclosure news prompted former Centennial Councilwoman
Betty Ann Habig, a Republican, to deliver a letter Tuesday asking
Arapahoe County commissioners to set a high insurance bond for
Milliken when he takes office.
County treasurers are required to have an insurance bond in case
of fiscal malfeasance, said outgoing County Treasurer Adrian
Bernie Ciazza.
Milliken, a Democrat, said Habig s motivations were political.
Habig supported his opponent, Sue Sandstrom, in the treasurer s
race.
