A fire
at an apartment complex injured five people and forced 30 people out of their homes on Thanksgiving
Day.

The fire was reported at 3:45 a.m. Thursday.

Three adults and two children were taken to the hospital, Deputy Fire Marshal Doug Hall said. Four
of the victims suffered from smoke inhalation and the fifth suffered a back injury while escaping
the fire.

Investigators concluded that the fire started in a first-floor bedroom and quickly spread to the
second floor, but an exact cause had not been determined.

Hall did not have an estimate on damage but said the apartment where the fire started was a total
loss. He said it could be early next week before residents can return home.

It s unfortunate for this to happen on any day but particularly on Thanksgiving Day, at the start
of a four-day holiday, Hall said. It creates a lot of uncertainty for people. He said most of the
residents were staying with friends and family. The American Red Cross was helping other victims
find lodging, Hall said.
