Ashley Nu’u, a senior setter on the University of Colorado volleyball team, was named to the Big 12 Conference first team Monday in a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Nu’u, a graduate of Aurora’s Smoky Hill High School, was an honorable-mention selection the past two seasons and was the Big 12 freshman of the year in 2003. She ranks third on the Buffaloes’ career assist list, with 4,226.
Colorado also placed junior outside hitter Amber Sutherland, a graduate of Glenwood Springs High School, and sophomore middle blocker Lauren Schaefer on the honorable-mention list.
Nevada’s Fazekas earns WAC hoops plaudit
University of Nevada senior forward Nick Fazekas was named the Western Athletic Conference men’s basketball player of the week, the league announced.
Fazekas, a graduate of Arvada’s Ralston Valley High School, averaged 28.5 points and 14.5 rebounds as the Wolf Pack won two games last week. He leads the nation in rebounding with 14.8 per game and is seventh in scoring at 25.0. Fazekas has won the award nine times.
