Three weeks after the election, there’s a winner in the University of Colorado at-large regent’s race: Democrat Stephen Ludwig.
Secretary of State Gigi Dennis announced today that Ludwig collected 637,154 votes to defeat Republican Brian Davidson, who finished with 631,344. It was the last statewide race to be declared.
Dennis said Ludwig’s margin was big enough to avoid an automatic recount.
Ludwig declared himself the winner Tuesday, saying his tally showed him 5,800 votes ahead of Davidson, quite close to the actual margin.
Davidson, who hadn’t seen the official results, said Wednesday he was pleased the race was so close.
“It was a very tough year to run as a Republican, looking at the other statewide races,” said Davidson, a doctor from Denver.
Democrats captured the open governorship and an open congressional seat, both of which had been held by Republicans, and widened their margins in the state House and Senate Some of the results from the Nov. 7 general election were delayed because of problems in various counties with new voting machines and computer software.
Democratic state Sen. Ken Gordon didn’t concede the secretary of state’s race to Republican Mike Coffman until a week after the election. Computer glitches, misprinted absentee ballots and equipment malfunctions held up the tally in Denver, a Democratic stronghold.
Dennis said the all the official election results will be posted online Friday.
