Beaver Creek – Two canceled European World Cup races will not be shifted to Colorado next week because the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association was unable to find sponsorship to underwrite the costs.
Men’s races scheduled for Val d’Isere, France, next week were canceled Wednesday because of lack of snow. Women’s races scheduled that weekend in St. Moritz, Switzerland, were canceled last week.
World Cup organizers hoped to run a men’s and women’s super combined here or at Aspen, but USSA needed to find the money to pay for lodging, meals and other costs.
The World Cup will go back to Europe where there is hardly any snow and the prospect of many more cancellations.
“This is one of the most frustrating situations I am in since I have worked in the World Cup (32 years),” said chief race official Guenther Hujara of the International Ski Federation. “I am sad to say this when we are at a site, Beaver Creek, where we are heartily welcome and where we find more than excellent conditions.”
